PlanetMySQL Blog: InnoDB Full-Text Search Tutorial

The InnoDB full-text search capability is an exciting feature. The full-text search itself is generally useful to have in an RDBMS. If an application is using all InnoDB tables except for one that is used for full-text searches, now that last table can be switched to InnoDB. If putting the full-text data in a MyISAM table led to scalability problems, duplication, or a less-than-ideal schema design, now those issues can be addressed.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Difference between InnoDB FTS and MyISAM FTS

With the latest MySQL 5.6 feature preview, InnoDB now has its own Fulltext Search (FTS) support. People might wonder how different is this FTS comparing with that of MyISAM. From the usage standpoint, they seem very similar with no apparent difference. However, in the underlying FTS engine, the difference is huge, since two are built on different storage engines with totally different design.

PlanetMySQL Blog: About InnoDB: Shortened warm-up times with a preloaded InnoDB buffer pool

This comment is in regard to this InnoDB blog post. The page talks about a new feature which allows you to save on shutdown an InnoDB buffer pool and to load this on startup, ensuring that once loaded the database will perform with this "hot" cache. That sounds interesting as I have seen on numerous occasions that if the buffer pool is not warm then the performance can be a magnitude worse.

New Release of MySQL Connector/MXJ 5.0.12 (GA)

MySQL Connector/MXJ 5.0.12 is now available for download. MySQL Connector/MXJ is a Java utility package for deploying and managing a MySQL RDBMS.

MySQL Connector/MXJ may be bundled into an existing Java application and managed as a POJO (Plain Old Java Object) or launched by creating a Connector/J connection. This makes it easy for Java developers creating an application that uses JDBC through MySQL Connector/J to deploy applications by reducing installation barriers for their end users.

I've seen a number of solutions for finding long running transactions or sessions within InnoDB/MySQL now. Every single one of them has been implemented as a script that is either invoked manually, or via some cron job, that then connects and tries to find, and possibly diagnose or kill, transactions that break some "long running" threshold. We also have a rule in MySQL Enterprise Monitor that flags this for further inspection.

MySQL 5.6: Data dictionary LRU

In MySQL 5.6 we've added a new feature that closes and unloads table instances from the InnoDB internal data dictionary, once a user configurable threshold is reached. This ends the situation where you could have hundreds of megabytes caching rarely used entries until the server was restarted and will be particularly appreciated by hosting and software as a service providers.

Introducing page_cleaner thread in InnoDB

In MySQL 5.6.2 we have introduced a new background thread named the page_cleaner in InnoDB. Adaptive flushing of modified buffer pool pages in the main background thread, async flushing by a foreground query thread if the log files are near to wrapping around, idle flushing and shutdown flushing are now moved to this thread, leaving only the last resort sync flushing in foreground query threads. We╒ve also added counters for these activities.

Information Schema for InnoDB System Tables

InnoDB Persistent Statistics at last

In our 5.6 release, we introduced a new feature called "InnoDB Metrics Table" as part of our effort to extend InnoDB diagnostic and monitoring capability. The feature consolidates all InnoDB related Performance and Resource related counters (as of today, 176 counters) and makes them available through an information schema table. In addition, it gives the user the ability to control these counters for their monitoring need.
