DevZone Article: MySQL 5.6 Early Access Features - InnoDB and Replication!
Rob Young

MySQL 5.5 has been widely acknowledged to be the best release in the history of MySQL. And, in April 2011, we raised the bar again with Development Milestone Release (DMR) and Early Access features of MySQL 5.6. At OSCON 2011, we are delivering more early access features for InnoDB and Replication. These features are focused on better scalability, performance and flexibility. We look forward to community testing and feedback.

PlanetMySQL Blog: InnoDB Full-Text Search Tutorial
John Russell

The InnoDB full-text search capability is an exciting feature. The full-text search itself is generally useful to have in an RDBMS. If an application is using all InnoDB tables except for one that is used for full-text searches, now that last table can be switched to InnoDB. If putting the full-text data in a MyISAM table led to scalability problems, duplication, or a less-than-ideal schema design, now those issues can be addressed.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Difference between InnoDB FTS and MyISAM FTS
Jimmy Yang

With the latest MySQL 5.6 feature preview, InnoDB now has its own Fulltext Search (FTS) support. People might wonder how different is this FTS comparing with that of MyISAM. From the usage standpoint, they seem very similar with no apparent difference. However, in the underlying FTS engine, the difference is huge, since two are built on different storage engines with totally different design.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Binlog Group Commit Experiments
Mats Kindahl

It was a while ago since I talked about binary log group commit. Since then, Kristian has released a version of binary log group commit that seems to work well. However, for a few reasons that will be outlined below, we decided to do experiments ourselves using the approach that I have described earlier.

PlanetMySQL Blog: About InnoDB: Shortened warm-up times with a preloaded InnoDB buffer pool
Simon Mudd

This comment is in regard to this InnoDB blog post. The page talks about a new feature which allows you to save on shutdown an InnoDB buffer pool and to load this on startup, ensuring that once loaded the database will perform with this "hot" cache. That sounds interesting as I have seen on numerous occasions that if the buffer pool is not warm then the performance can be a magnitude worse.

PlanetMySQL Blog: MySQL 5.6 Replication - New Early Access Features
Mat Keep

At OSCON 2011, Oracle delivered more early access features for MySQL 5.6 replication. These features are focused on better integration, performance and data integrity, built on the significant replication enhancements announced as part of the MySQL 5.6.2 Development Milestone Release back in April.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Improvements for PHP application portability in PHP.next
Johannes Schlüter

I was writing about PHP.next before, and many things have improved there meanwhile. Most notably we have a committed version number: the next PHP release will be called PHP 5.4. The topic I want to talk about today is "Improved application portability" which covers multiple small changes which aim at making it simpler for developers to write applications working on any PHP setup.
