PlanetMySQL Blog: A step by step guide to upgrading to MySQL 5.5
Ovais Tariq
MySQL 5.5 has created a lot of hype and its not just hype. There are major performance enhancements not only in the MySQL server itself but in the newer InnoDB storage engine shipped with MySQL 5.5. That's exactly the reason why I have myself upgraded to MySQL 5.5. Now since I haven't come across a guide to help in upgrading to MySQL 5.5, I thought why not make one myself.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Some hidden goods in MySQL 5.5
Giuseppe Maxia
The announcement of MySQL 5.5 released as GA has outlined the improvements in this version, which indeed has enough good new features to excite any user. There are two additions, though, that were lost in the noise of the bigger features, and I would like to spend a few words for each of them.

PlanetMySQL Blog: InnoDB locking
Mark Callaghan
How well do you understand InnoDB locking? The documentation is good but would benefit from a few examples. If you want to debug contention for InnoDB then you need to understand record, gap and next-key locks, the reasons for using next-key locks and the locks used by different statements.

PlanetMySQL Blog: KSCOPE11 - ODTUG Conference June 2011
Chris Schneider
This year I found an interesting conference that brings both Oracle and MySQL users together, KSCOPE11. This will be the second year with a dedicated MySQL track at Kscope11. There will be a clear focus on providing both developers and DBAs the right information, tools and best practices within MySQL, emphasizing scalability and performance.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Tuning InnoDB Configuration
Ovais Tariq
I had earlier written a post on tuning the MySQL server configuration which was more geared towards the MyISAM storage engine. While that is not because I didn't intend on ignoring InnoDB, but because I had planned a whole post on tuning InnoDB related configuration. So this post is the post that I had planned, and I have discussed the major configuration parameters in here that should help you out most of the times.

PlanetMySQL Blog: MySQL Server and NUMA architectures
Mikael Ronstrom
When you run MySQL on a large NUMA box it is possible to control the memory placement and the use of CPUs through the use of numactl. Most modern servers are NUMA boxes nowadays.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Are you using the deadline scheduler?
Partha Dutta
There have been many posts about performance, benchmarking and the results. Many DBAs have talked in the past about the deadline scheduler, available in all modern Linux distributions. The deadline scheduler is very effective for database systems, as it tries to prevent starvation of I/O requests.
